The Los Angeles Dodgers have made the decision to place All-Star right-hander Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 6, due to back tightness. Glasnow, who is 30 years old, has been a key player for the Dodgers this season, boasting an 8-5 record with a 3.47 ERA. He was acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay in December and subsequently signed a lucrative five-year contract.
Manager Dave Roberts revealed that Glasnow experienced a flare-up in his back while playing catch over the weekend. Despite this setback, Roberts remains optimistic about Glasnow's recovery, stating that the pitcher is expected to return after the All-Star break.
Glasnow currently leads the major leagues with an impressive 143 strikeouts, marking a significant achievement for the Dodgers. His strikeout rate of 11.81 per nine innings ranks as the second-best in baseball, showcasing his exceptional pitching abilities.
In light of Glasnow's absence, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene has been named as an injury replacement for the NL All-Star team. Greene, with a 5-4 record and a 3.45 ERA, will step in to fill the void left by Glasnow.
Despite his talent, Glasnow has faced challenges with injuries in the past. He underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2021 and missed part of last season due to a strained left oblique. However, he bounced back to achieve career highs in strikeouts, innings pitched, and starts.
Following Glasnow's placement on the injured list, the Dodgers now have six All-Stars on their roster, including catcher Will Smith, first baseman Freddie Freeman, outfielder Teoscar Hernández, and injured shortstop Mookie Betts. They join starting DH Shohei Ohtani on the NL All-Star team.
To address the void left by Glasnow, the Dodgers have recalled right-handed pitcher Michael Petersen from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Petersen will provide additional depth to the team's pitching rotation as they navigate through Glasnow's absence.
