Doctor Who spotted filming in Welsh mansion with Hollywood guest star

The stars of Doctor Who have been filming at Tredegar House in Newport - with a very famous face joining them. After film crews were spotted at the 17th-century mansion on the outskirts of Newport, the BBC confirmed the location filming with a set of pictures.

They show Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa, who is set to play the fifteenth Doctor, and Coronation Street actor Millie Gibson who will be playing Ruby Sunday, in Regency-era costume. They're joined by Jonathan Groff, the Glee and Mindhunter star who played King George III in the musical Hamilton.

Groff's guest star role in the new series was confirmed a week ago. He joins other big names including Neil Patrick Harris and Ru Paul's Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon to star opposite the Time Lord in the coming months.

In a statement, the BBC said: "Dress to impress and beware the duchess… Jonathan Groff has landed and has begun filming on the new series of Doctor Who and here is the first look of him in character in his mysterious key role alongside Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson.

"Jonathan shot to fame when he landed the role of Jessie in musical comedy drama Glee. He has since been internationally celebrated for his work on-screen, from starring as Eric in the box office hit Knock at the Cabin, to playing Holden Ford in the critically acclaimed series Mindhunter."

Tredegar House's website states the mansion house and gardens are closed from May 9 to May 13. Fans on Twitter spotted the mansion being set up for what appeared to be interior and night shoots, with lighting being set up outside the windows.

The manor house has featured in plenty of TV from Antiques Roadshow and Hairy Bikers to the BBC's Sherlock series - and has previously been used for Doctor Who countless times including the David Tennant episode The Girl in the Fireplace.

Doctor Who will return to TV in the autumn with three special 60th anniversary episodes starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate, who returns as Donna Noble. Ncuti Gatwa's first episode will then air over the festive period, with a full series to follow.
