Doctor Who is going through that great change again when fans wait to see what their new Timelord is like.
Jodie Whittaker stepped away from the BBC show with her last special earlier this year and to mark the 60th anniversary, fans will meet their new Timelord.
Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa is taking over the role, but he won’t be alone in the episode.
David Tennant is reprising his role as the Doctor in an announcement that broke social media earlier this year.
Filming is already underway in Camden, London, though the plot details remain under wraps.
There’ll inevitably be a ‘timey whimey’ explanation for how the Tenth Doctor is back, but until then here is a breakdown of all the confirmed stars.
Doctor Who 60th anniversary cast
Ncuti Gatwa
Ncuti was confirmed as the new Doctor back in May 2022, with the official Twitter page posting: “The future is here! Ncuti Gatwa is the Doctor.”
Fans were overjoyed by the news, with Ncuti bringing with him a dedicated fanbase from his appearance in Sex Education.
Viewers are yet to see him in the role though, as he hasn’t even been spotted on set for the 60th anniversary.
This is because he is busy filming Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie alongside Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie.
Yasmin Finney
The Doctor is nothing without his companion, and Ncuti’s will be played by Tasmin Finney.
Her stardom skyrocketed when she appeared in Netflix ’s Heartstopper but now she will be introduced to a new wave of fans.
Strangely, her character is confirmed as Rose, the name shared with David Tennant’s old companion famously played by Billie Piper.
It isn’t clear if this is just a coincidence or if there will be a deeper connection.
Given that David is back though, it seems unlikely that she would share the name with the Doctor’s old true love without a purpose.
David Tennant
The biggest casting announcement for the anniversary is by far the return of David Tennant in the role.
He has already been spotted around Camden Market donning his iconic blue trench coat and white trainers.
He hasn’t played the role since the 50th anniversary with The Day Of The Doctor in 2013.
Then he was joined by Matt Smith, who was the Doctor of the day, along with the late John Hurt as the War Doctor.
Catherine Tate
David may have gone through a few companions before his tenure was up, but one of his most iconic was when he shared the screen with Catherine Tate.
Whovians will be delighted to know she is back again as Donna right alongside her Timelord.
She has also been seen on set with David, sporting her old style from 10 years ago, though it isn’t clear how she is involved at the stage.
Bernard Cribbins
Bernard Cribbins comes straight from that season too, playing Donna’s grandfather Wilfred Mott.
The BBC is yet to officially confirm the star’s return, but he has also been spotted on the London sets.
His story ended back in 2010 after Donna left the series, so it will be interesting to see how he returns.
Jacqueline King
Rounding out the returning cast is Jacqueline King as Donna’s mum Sylvie Noble.
She has once again been spotted on set without the BBC officially confirming her involvement.
It seems the Donna clan will all be playing an important role in the special, but just how they all tied in remains to be seen.
Neil Patrick Harris
Finally, in a major surprise move, Neil Patrick Harris confirmed on social media that he will be facing off against the Doctor in the new episode.
The How I Met Your Mother star, who previously joined Russell T Davies' stunning 2021 miniseries It's A Sin, revealed himself as the new villain.
He took to Instagram to share the news, writing: “My current gig. Never looked more dashing. Thank you for inviting me into your Whoniverse, @russelltdavies63.
“I’ll try my hardest to do my worst. This Doctor has no idea what’s in store. And even if he does… Who cares? Ha ha ha HA ha-ha-ha! @bbcdoctorwho.”
Other than the post and a snap of himself dressed in what looks like a period surgeon’s outfit, the character remains a complete mystery.
