Doctor Mosley issues advice for losing belly fat and meal plan high in 'protein and fibre'

There are many people out there looking to lose weight as they look to kick off the new year in a healthy way.

Whilst we can all set ourselves the task of sticking to our weight loss goals, or a new year resolution, it is much easier said than done. But to help people out, one well-known expert has offered some advice for those looking to start the new year with a new mindset, and get on track.

Doctor Michael Mosley previously appeared on ITV's This Morning, revealing that there are simple and effective ways to lose belly fat quickly by cutting out one particular food type, reports the ECHO.

He said: "It is possible to reduce it. Even the slimmest of people can suffer with belly fat. And often, the abdomen is one of the most dangerous places to store fat."

Doctor Mosley explained that "Fat cells deep in your abdomen – also known as ‘visceral fat’ – are reluctant to let go of their energy-stash.

“To find the extra energy needed to fuel a small energy deficit, or a standard gym session, your body will look to other reserves first, like your glutes.

"Fortunately, recent breakthroughs in medical and sports science have shown that it is possible to throw this gradient into reverse. You can lose belly fat, and you can lose it fast.”

According to the doctor, the key to shedding fat is something many of us are aware of - sugar. And whilst we should be eating the foods we love without restricting ourselves, we need to eat everything in moderation.

He explained: “To make a serious impact on your belly fat, cutting out sugar-spikes is key. A surprising number of ‘diet’ snacks and drinks are high in sugar and are marketed as diet foods because they happen to be low in fat.”

To start off with, it is recommended that people limit their intake of food and drink containing more than five per cent of sugar to “no more than twice a week”.

People should also try replacing processed carbohydrates such as white bread and white pasta with “slow-energy sources, such as brown rice or quinoa”.

Doctor Mosley's meal plan

He states that his plan involves lots of protein and fibre, and of course, meals that are low in sugar.

These include:

  • Breakfast - Mushroom omelette with kimchi-style sauerkraut
  • Lunch - Turmeric chicken salad or a chickpea tagine
  • Dinner - Salmon and broccoli or a kimchi rice tofu bowl
  • Snacks - Sugar free chocolate brownies that contain beetroot and dates or a handful of nuts

Items such as turmeric are said to have a lot of anti-inflammatory properties whilst "kimchi-style sauerkraut – which is great for the gut", according to the doctor.
