Fremantle are in the box seat to finally land Jeremy Sharp after the wingman was axed by Gold Coast, but Dockers are reeling with the news forward Josh Corbett has been ruled out for the 2024 season.
Sharp and Jake Stein were informed by the Suns on Friday they wouldn't be offered new deals for next year.
Fremantle tried to lure Sharp during last year's trade period, but talks with the Suns collapsed.
With the Dockers needing to find a replacement for the departed Liam Henry (St Kilda), Sharp looms as an ideal candidate.
Fremantle can snare the 22-year-old as a delisted free agent or through the rookie draft.
Sharp, who was taken with pick No.27 in the 2019 national draft, has played 23 games since his debut in 2020.
But he didn't notch a senior game this year and wasn't required under new Suns coach Damien Hardwick.
West Coast could also make a move on Fremantle-born Sharp as the Eagles continue their extensive rebuild.
Fremantle are also in talks with former Melbourne and Carlton tall Oscar McDonald as they look to fill the void left by Joel Hamling's move to Sydney.
And the Dockers revealed on Friday that Corbett will undergo hip surgery in late November, with an expected rehabilitation period of up to 12 months.
Corbett played five games for the Dockers this year after crossing from Gold Coast, and his injury robs Fremantle of forward-line depth.
Collingwood have axed Will Kelly - the son of Magpies premiership player and current chief executive Craig Kelly.
The 23-year-old made five AFL appearances for the Magpies after being drafted as a father-son selection in 2018.
He could still receive a lifeline ahead of next season after Collingwood said they will explore the option of Kelly training with the AFL program during the 2024 Supplementary Selection Period.
The Pies also announced on Friday they have re-signed Nathan Kreuger, Aiden Begg and Josh Carmichael for 2024.
Geelong have informed midfielder Flynn Kroeger he won't be offered a contract for 2024.
North Melbourne's Brayden George has endured another injury setback but it's not expected to sideline him for the start of the 2024 season.
George, who missed all of 2023 after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in August 2022, underwent surgery this week to repair a left elbow dislocation.
The 19-year-old, who was taken with pick No.26 in the 2022 national draft, sustained the injury during an off-season training session while spending time back home in Wangaratta.
"While this will impact his pre-season, we expect Brayden to be back running soon with the aim to return to full unrestricted training in approximately 12 weeks," North Melbourne football manager Todd Viney said in a statement.
"We don't expect the injury to impact his availability for the upcoming season."
