Doc Martin fans 'in tears' as tribute to ITV series airs following final ever episode

After 18 years and 10 series of the ITV drama Doc Martin, viewers have been left "heartbroken" that there will be no more further episodes. On Thursday, December 29, a documentary, Farewell Doc Martin, featured behind the scenes secrets and interviews with lead actor Martin Clunes and his wife Philippa Braithwaite, who produced the show. It came just four days after the final ever episode was aired on Christmas Day.

Following the documentary, many fans took to Twitter to voice their disappointment and sadness that the show was ending. One said: "I am heartbroken that Doc Martin is over. I shed a few tears in the very last episode and also during the Christmas one. Martin Clunes and the rest of the cast are all fantastic."

A fifth said: "Oh I’m gonna miss this show I loved it #docmartin". Doc Martin first aired in 2004 and Martin Clunes has played the lead role of Doc Martin since then.

Martin was not the only member of his family to work on the show. He has a famous wife Philippa Braithwaite who is a successful TV producer who worked in this role for Doc Martin.

Philippa was the producer for every series of Doc Martin since it began and has also produced other shows for her husband including the ITV drama Manhunt and Martin Clunes: Islands of the Pacific. The couple have been married 25 years since 1997, with Martin proposing in Hawaii.

The final ever episode of Doc Martin aired on Christmas Day 2022 but some viewers were left disappointed, believing the show could have had a different ending.
