Do I need to wear a mask on planes? Ryanair and Aer Lingus' face covering policy you should be aware of

After Taoiseach Micheal Martin lifted the majority of restrictions last month, he also outlined that a few were here to stay for the next few weeks at least.

Among them were the use of the Digital Covid Certificate for overseas travel and mask wearing in a number of settings including public transport and in shops.

Government guidelines also say that masks must be worn in airports, but are they required on planes?

Airlines such as Ryanair and Aer Lingus have outlined their policy for passengers when it comes to Covid-19 and staying safe.

Ryanair

On their website, Ryanair said that passengers “must wear a face mask/covering in the airport and on board your flight”.

Certain countries require arrivals to adhere to wearing a particular type of face masks, which Ryanair asks passengers to obey.

“Some countries such as Italy, require this to be a surgical face mask. If you are travelling to/from/within Austria or Germany, it must be a FFP2 face mask,” they said.

The airline also ask passengers to keep masks on until they have left the airport terminal upon landing.

Staff will also wear their masks for the duration.

Aer Lingus

Aer Lingus have also implemented a mask mandate for passengers and staff, and ask passengers to wear the mask the country they're flying to requires.

“It is now mandatory for all passengers to wear a face mask or covering to fly with us unless you cannot do so for medical reasons in which case you must present a medical certificate confirming this,” a statement on their website said.

Face coverings “can be reusable cloth masks or disposable masks” and the airline asks that passengers wear them from “your departure airport to when you leave your destination airport”.

Young children “who are not able to maintain a face covering” do not need to wear one on Aer Lingus flights.

In relation to longer flights, they said: “Masks should be replaced when they become wet or soiled, or after being worn for 4 hours.

“We would remind customers to ensure they have a sufficient supply of masks for the entire duration of their travel.”

If you have a connecting flight with a different airline, it’s important to check out their regulations before your trip.
