DNA testing is underway on a woman police believe could be the mother of a newborn baby abandoned in Western Sydney last month.
The ABC understands she presented to police earlier this week, with testing currently being conducted to confirm whether she is the mother.
The baby girl was just hours old when a family heard her crying from their patio in Blacktown on April 21.
The family, who have no connection to the baby, had only moved into the neighbouring house a week prior.
When the infant was found, she was not clothed and still had the umbilical cord attached.
Police said at the time they were concerned for the mother's welfare.
"For anyone to leave a child like that, they obviously need some sort of help," Acting Inspector David McInerney said last month.
They reinforced she was not in trouble from police.
"We are trying to help her," Mr McInerney said.
Investigations confirmed she was not born at a hospital.
Detectives spent days door knocking, and seeking CCTV footage from neighbours in attempt to sight anyone in the area at the time who was pregnant or distressed.
The Department of Communities and Justice assumed care of the one-month-old girl, who was in good health when she was taken to Blacktown Hospital.
