Allyson Phillips, mother of Laken Riley, second left, listens during the trial of Jose Ibarra at Athens-Clarke County Superior Court on Monday, Nov. 18, 2024, in Athens, Ga. (Miguel Martinez/Atlanta J

A forensic DNA expert testified on Tuesday that fingernail clippings from Laken Riley's right hand were linked to the genetic profile of Jose Ibarra, the accused killer. The testing revealed only two likely genetic profiles - those of Riley and Ibarra.

GBI crime lab scientist Ashley Hinkle explained that finding one person's DNA under another person's fingernails typically indicates some form of scratching or contact with the nail. In this case, Riley's shorter nails made accidental contact less likely.

Blue jacket DNA matched only Riley and Ibarra.

Further evidence was found on a cutting of a blue jacket discovered near Ibarra's apartment. The DNA profile on the jacket matched only Riley and Ibarra. Additionally, black gloves recovered from a bush near Ibarra's apartment contained only Riley's DNA.

Samples taken from rocks and a tree at the crime scene also yielded conclusive results for Riley's DNA. The expert testimony provided crucial genetic evidence linking both Riley and Ibarra to the crime.
