Drivers can expect more than a month of delays and diversions when a busy major road shuts for major improvement works next month.
National Highways is resurfacing the A19 between Holystone and Killingworth for what it calls “essential improvements”, with work starting on Monday (November 7).
It means the carriageway will be shut in both directions from 9pm until 6am on weekdays until mid-December, with the chance of occasional Sunday work if the project is running behind schedule.

“It’s essential we carry out this work before winter arrives,” said National Highways project manager Adam Smith.
“We’re mindful that this work may cause delays and disruption and have worked to minimise the impact on drivers as much as we can. However, where possible, customers should plan for longer journeys or choose another route if one is available.”
Engineers will also be replacing road markings, studs, and signposts along the stretch of road, with diversions in place during the works.
