Divers arrive at Nicola Bulley search site after police 'receive river tip-off'

Divers arrived at the Nicola Bulley search site after police received a tip-off from two walkers this morning.

Sadly, in an update this afternoon, police have confirmed a body has been found.

Two police cars raced to the scene less than a mile from where the 45-year-old mum-of-two was last seen in St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire, on January 27.

A man and a woman were seen pointing to a spot in the River Wyre, with police drones and a helicopter hovering over an outcrop of trees and undergrowth.

Lancashire Police said officers were called at 11.36am to reports of a body in the River Wyre, close to Rawcliffe Road.

An underwater search team and specialist officers attended the scene, entered the water and recovered a body.

No formal identification has been carried out yet - so police cannot say whether the body is Nicola Bulley at this time.

Lancashire Police are currently treating the death as unexplained and procedures to identify the body are ongoing.

The force said Nicola's family has been updated about the latest development.

Roads, as well as part of a footpath by the river, were sealed off this morning.

A photographer at the scene told The Mirror: "It all happened so fast. Police have sealed all the roads off.

"It's fair to say a massive search is underway."

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Rebecca Smith also arrived at the scene.

It comes 23 days after Nicola's disappearance, which triggered a massive investigation centred on the river.

Police said Nicola she may have fallen into the river in a "10-minute window" - between 9.10am and 9.20am on the day she went missing.

The mum left her home at 8.26am on January 27, dropping her two daughters off at school and engaging in a brief conversation with another parent around 15 minutes later.

She then took Willow for a walk along the path by the River Wyre at 8.43am, heading towards a gate in the lower field and was later seen by a dog walker who knew her.

At 8.53am, Ms Bulley sent an email to her boss, followed by a message to her friends six minutes later, before logging on to a Microsoft Teams call at 9.01am.

She was seen by a second witness at 9.10am - the last known sighting.

Her phone was back in the area of the bench at 9.20am before the Teams call ended 10 minutes later, with her mobile remaining logged on after the call.

At 9.33am, another dog walker found her phone on a bench beside the river, with Willow darting between the two, appearing "bone dry and agitated".

At 10.50am, Ms Bulley's family and the school attended by her children were told about her disappearance.

The mortgage adviser's phone was also found on a nearby bench still logged into a Microsoft Teams call.

The search for her has since been extended to the sea.

Her family have called for a stop to "speculation and rumour", adding: "The public focus has to be on finding her and not making up wild theories about her personal life."

Ms Bulley's father Ernie Bulley has said "every day is a struggle" since his daughter vanished.

Speaking to Sky News on Friday, he said: "[We're] no further on from three weeks ago.

"[We] just need a breakthrough to give us some hope."

Earlier this week, police were criticised following the disclosure of private information about Nicola.

Lancashire Constabulary came under fire for making Ms Bulley's struggles with alcohol and peri-menopause public.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman has contacted police leaders about the investigation as the Prime Minister said he too was "concerned" by the revelation.

Appearing on the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme, Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt described the ordeal as "horrific" for the family, saying: "It's quite shocking.

"And I think that both the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary are right to raise concerns about this."

She added: "And I think it really does grate with a lot of women and we have to put up with all kinds of sexist behaviour in all kinds of settings.

"And I think to have it play out in this kind of environment is why people are so upset."

Asked whether police displayed sexism in their dealing with the case, Ms Mordaunt said: "I think that they clearly were motivated to try and explain why this case is a complex one.

"But I think there are serious questions to be asked about why they wanted to reveal particular information."

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper also raised concerns about the case, saying there is a wider problem with how the police deal with misogyny.

Ms Cooper, who also contacted the force about the level of detail it released about the missing mother's personal life, said she had received "further information" from the force.

This afternoon, Lancashire Police said in a statement: "This morning, Sunday, 19 February, you may be aware of police activity around the river near to St Michael's. We want to provide you with an update on that activity.

"An underwater search team and specialist officers have subsequently attended the scene, entered the water and have sadly recovered a body.

"Procedures to identify the body are ongoing.

"We are currently treating the death as unexplained.

"Nicola's family have been informed of developments and our thoughts are with them at this most difficult of times. We ask that their privacy is respected."
