Disruption on A1 in Northumberland after car was 'severely destroyed' in blaze

Early morning commuters faced disruption in Northumberland after the A1 was closed due to a car fire.

Emergency crews attended the scene on the A1 between Berwick-Upon-Tweed and Alnwick due to the car near Brownieside from approximately 4.45am on Thursday.

According to National Highways, the road was closed in both directions while crews from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police worked at the scene.

The road was closed for over an hour with disruption on the surrounding roads before the road re-opened at approximately 7am. Officers from Northumbria Police remained at the scene while they waited for grit to be put down on the road.

A spokesperson for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews from Belford, Alnwick and Amble attended the scene. Thankfully, nobody was injured but the car was destroyed.

They said: "We have attended the scene of a car fire near Brownieside in Northumberland this morning from approximately 4.45am.

"Appliances from Belford, Alnwick and Amble were in attendance at the scene. A small car was found severely destroyed.

"We left the scene in hands of police and National Highways were also in attendance. The last pump to leave was at 5.53am."

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "We first received a call at 5.05am directly from fire service after reports that a car was on fire on the A1 northbound between the junctions with the A1068 and the A1167 south of Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

"One vehicle was involved. Nobody was injured in the incident."
