Disney Cruise Line lights up New York sky to celebrate new ship

As Disney Cruise Line prepares to launch its newest ship, the Disney Treasure, next month, the cruise line sent the much-anticipated ship on a special trip to New York City for a grand christening celebration in New York Harbor on Nov. 19.

An adventure-themed ship inspired by Walt Disney’s passion for travel and exploration, the Disney Treasure is the sixth ship to enter the Disney Cruise Line fleet as part of an ambitious growth plan. Seven more Disney cruise ships are expected to enter service by 2031.

As he introduced the Disney Treasure during the christening ceremony, Chairman of Disney Experiences Josh D’Amaro discussed the cruise line’s expansion.

“This is an unprecedented era of growth for Disney Experiences, including Disney Cruise Line, where we are more than doubling our fleet to 13 ships by 2031,” he said. “With the Disney Treasure, we continue to deliver an unparalleled family vacation at sea through the magic of Disney storytelling. The memories that our guests create on board this stunning ship, they will last a lifetime.”

Drone show dazzles at Disney Treasure christening ceremony

After introductory remarks and a video preview of the family cruise vacation experience on board the new ship, singer-songwriter Jordin Sparks took the stage to perform the Disney Treasure anthem, “Live the Adventure.” The first signature song released for a Disney cruise ship, “Live the Adventure” is intended to set the tone for a bold new era of Disney Cruise Line vacations.

Along with a performance of the anthem, the christening ceremony featured a drone show above the ship, which provided Disney Cruise Line fans with a preview of the ship’s Disney-themed venues and entertainment. Scenes from Disney stories including “Aladdin,” “Coco,” “Moana,” and the Disney Parks attraction Haunted Mansion lit up the sky representing spaces and shows that passengers will soon experience on board the Disney Treasure.

As the drone show concluded with the pop of a Champagne bottle in the sky, Disney Cruise Line officially christened the ship on behalf of all cast, crew, Imagineers and employees of The Walt Disney Company, the honorary “godparents” of the Disney Treasure.

“We christen thee Disney Treasure,” godparents recited during the ceremony, offering a traditional maritime blessing for the new ship. “May God bless this ship and all who sail upon her.”

Disney CEO honors Disney Treasure godparents

Alongside Captain Mickey and Captain Minnie, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger honored the ship’s godparents as he joined D’Amaro to introduce the Disney Treasure at the christening celebration.

“This incredible new ship is a shining example of everything our fans love about Disney. We also know that at the heart of everything we do are the dedicated cast members and employees who create the magic that brings joy to millions of people around the globe,” Iger said.

“And that's why, in keeping with maritime tradition, we're proud to honor our more than 200,000 employees as the official godparents of the Disney Treasure. This is our way of paying tribute to the dreamers and doers who continue to tell our stories in the most compelling and innovative ways,” he added.

The Disney Treasure will depart on its maiden voyage on Dec. 21, a seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from Port Canaveral. The ship’s inaugural season includes seven-night cruise itineraries to both the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Port Canaveral.
