'Disco cowgirl’ fashion trend could take over UK festival fashion this summer

Fashion trends come and go with each year and even each season, but one that seems to be catching on right now has been referred to as ‘disco cowgirl.’ But what exactly does this relatively new trend entail? High street retailer Boohoo has shared some insight as the look seems set to take the festival fashion scene by storm this summer.

While the western look has been popular in the States for many years, cowboy boots rose in popularity late last year and that trend has continued into 2023. And it’s not just Americans sporting them - British celebrities Millie Bobby Brown, Amelia Dimoldenberg and Saffron Barker have all been seen wearing the iconic footwear to events.

But now the cowboy boots trend has evolved into what has now become known as the ‘disco cowgirl’ trend. This essentially pulls together items that are covered in rhinestones or sparkles and pairs them with a pair of cowboy boots - basically a glitz and glam take on the more traditional look. Think Beyoncé's promo poster for her Renaissance tour, where she's seen wearing a mirror-ball cowboy hat.

Online clothing brand Boohoo has shared its guide about where and how to pull off this bold trend, and it really isn’t that hard to create the look. They've shared some suggestions from their online shop and app.

Its design manager Penelope Armstrong said: “Cowboy boots are perfect for festival season, and - even though we’re not in Palm Springs - they’re still a must-have for Brits looking to stay on trend this summer. And whether you’re looking to jump on the ‘disco cowgirl’ trend, are a fan of western fashion or want some new sturdy boots, it’s easy to incorporate them into your day-to-day wardrobe.”

With Glastonbury just around the corner, Penelope explained she wouldn’t be surprised to see people trying out the trend, with ‘cowboy boots and dress combos’ one she expects to be worn by many - which could be needed given the weather forecast.

The Cowboy boots on offer range from your traditional black, white or brown to metallic multi-coloured look and can be bought as cheap as £16 in the sale. Or if you’re looking for a more high-end investment, they have real leather pairs being sold for as much as £224.25.

Penelope suggested for those new to the style, pairing the statement boots with a more casual look might be the best place to start. She said: “A flowing midi skirt and graphic tee to start. If you’re wanting to add a bit of sparkle but keep it subtle, adding a rhinestone belt is a great way to bring that ‘disco’ glitz.”
