Dipo Akinyemi nominated for PFA Scotland Player of the Year prize as Ayr United striker makes shortlist

Ayr goal king Dipo Akinyemi is in the hunt for a leading award after his blockbuster debut season at Somerset Park.

The 24-goal striker is among the nominees for PFA Scotland's Player of the Year Awards in the Championship.

The peer awards are voted for by the country's players, with Akinyemi among four nominees in Scotland's second tier.

Dom Thomas and Grant Savoury of Queen's Park and Paul McMullan of Dundee make up the shortlist.

Akinyemi has been a smash hit at Somerset since making the switch from English non-league side Welling United last summer.

He is the Championship's top scorer and won a host of awards at United's Player of the Year event on Saturday night.

Lawrence Shankland was the last Ayr player to win one of the awards in 2018, after he hit 29 goals in 33 games en route to United winning the League One title.

Akinyemi will learn his fate at a glittering awards bash in Glasgow's Hilton Hotel on Sunday, May 14, where winners from across the Scottish game will take their bow.
