Diogo Jota Liverpool return date confirmed as Jurgen Klopp offers Thiago Alcantara injury update

Diogo Jota is closing in on a return to training as Liverpool's injury crisis slowly begins to ease up. The Reds saw Joel Matip and Curtis Jones take part in their session on Monday, having seen their squad decimated by injury during the opening weeks of the season.

Having been without as many as 10 senior players for their opening four games, Liverpool only recorded their first win of the campaign last time out as they thrashed AFC Bournemouth 9-0. And having seen his squad stung so hard by injuries, last week Klopp admitted the Reds had changed transfer stance and would look to sign a new midfielder if possible before Thursday's deadline.

But while that search is ongoing, the German revealed a number of his walking wounded are closing in on returns with Jota expected back in training before the end of the week, with Thiago Alcantara also not too far behind. The Portuguese suffered a hamstring injury on international duty before being dealt a further setback on his return to pre-season training, while the Spaniard hasn't featured since limping off against Fulham on the opening day of the season.

And while Liverpool will be without the pair for Wednesday's clash with Newcastle, Klopp was relieved to see his squad's injury crisis begin to ease up.

"I think Diogo can train from Thursday on," he told reporters at his latest pre-match press conference. "Thiago I think, slightly later. We'll see.

"Calvin (Ramsay) is getting closer. Caoimhin Kelleher I saw walking outside for goalkeeper training. So there is light at the end of the tunnel, definitely."
