Diego Forlan explains why he missed Manchester United legends match with Liverpool

Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has revealed why he was not able to make it for the club’s legends match with Liverpool on Saturday.

The Uruguay legend was due to feature for the hosts but a cancelled flight meant he couldn’t make it over in time for the charity match, which is raising funds for the Manchester United Foundation. Forlan played for United between 2002 and 2004, scoring 17 times in 97 matches.

The 43-year-old was not the only player to miss the match, with Paul Scholes and Dwight Yorke also having to pull out. Forlan sent a message to United fans on Twitter ready for half-time.

In a video posted by the Foundation, he said: “Unluckily, we are stuck in Frankfurt with all the family. Our flight got cancelled so we couldn’t make it for the game.

“We really feel sorry, we were looking forward to see each other and bring the kids to Old Trafford for the first time but that won’t be possible. So let’s hope we can do it in the near future and have the possibility to see each other and play again all together.”
