Didi Hamann reveals what he has heard about Harvey Elliott after Liverpool breakthrough

Harvey Elliott is running up the right path with Liverpool but still has a lot to learn, according to Dietmar Hamann.

The teenager has made eight appearances for Liverpool so this season, scoring once against Cardiff City in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.

A serious injury kept him out of action for five months, but manager Jurgen Klopp has wasted no time bringing him back into the first team fold and former Liverpool midfielder Hamann believes this show that that the young prodigy is at the right club.

Speaking exclusively to Genting Casino, Hamann said: "Klopp’s given him a massive vote of confidence, bringing him back after a long injury, starting him in the San Siro against Inter Milan.

"He’s got the right coach, he’s got the right players. What we must not forget – you become a better player by training with the best players, and that’s what he does on a daily basis."

Although Elliott was not initially named in Liverpool's matchday squad for Sunday's Carabao Cup Final, a late injury to Thiago earned him a late call up which turned into a substitute appearance for the 18-year-old.

He went on to score in the subsequent penalty shoot-out and helped Liverpool win their first domestic cup competition in 10 years.

Hamann believes that the youngster should spend as much time as possible learning from Liverpool's established and experienced players and challenged the him to listen, learn and keep working hard.

The German said: "He should soak up everything. He should watch these guys before training, what they’re doing during and after training, and then find his own way to implement what he learns to get better.

"He’s talented but, as I said before, talent doesn’t count for anything. If you haven’t got the right head on your shoulders, you won’t make it.

"I hear he seems to be a very nice and humble guy. He’s got the potential, but he’s got a long way to go as well."

Elliott found himself in hot water with the FA after he was pictured holding a red flare on the Wembley pitch during post-match celebrations on Sunday.

Klopp advised reporters on Tuesday that he planned to speak to Elliott about the incident.

He said: "I didn't speak to Harvey yet. Will I speak to him? Yes, maybe.

"Harvey is a very young man, on the pitch. And outside his is still a little bit more a boy. But that's not a problem.

"He made a mistake. Because of the role model [position] we have. I will tell him. I can promise he won't do it again.

"Do I think it was the worst thing that ever happened in the world of football? No."
