Dickinson's Real Deal: Frog-obsessed Bristolian makes huge profit on St Nicholas Market relic

A frog-obsessed woman was able to make a sizeable profit on Dickinson's Real Deal from an 'unusual' relic she bought at St Nicholas' Market in Bristol. Carol went along to Aerospace Bristol to see if she could flog the very beautiful perfume bottle, which was topped with a stunning model of a frog.

With the dealers setting up a den underneath the wings of the Concorde, Carol was told by dealers to go and speak to Jan Keyne, an antique dealer who often appears on Dickinson's Real Deal. Carol said: "I have about 500 [frog-related items]... they all live with me in my house."

Referencing David's nickname in the episode which repeated today (August 2), Carol added: "I'm a bit like The Duke, as mad as a box of frogs."

Hoping to get at least £200 for the item, Carol told Jan: "I bought it about 15 years ago and added it to my collection of frogs, and I have decided today that I would like to try and sell it to you."

Inspecting the perfume bottle, Jan said: "I wouldn’t have thought there’s actually too many perfume bottles around with a frog on top.

"I think that's fairly unusual isn’t it because he’s quite small but he’s very very nicely modelled. When you bought it, Carol, where did you think it hailed from?"

Carol originally thought the perfume bottle was English, but was then told it was from France. According to Jan, the bottle dated from between 1880 and 1900, possibly 1910; importantly, there was no damage to the item, and although it was missing its glass stopper, Carol told Jan she had it at home.

Jan said: "I must say, the glass is very unusual, it's beautiful quality; it's almost like Bristol Blue and I would call it spiral glass, really, with cream glass running through and blue. So that's really quite an involved process, I would think."

It was time for Jan to lay her cards on the table. Starting off by laying a £50 note down, Carol dismissed Jan's initial offer of £70. After being told she was 'slightly cold' with her next offer of £100, and that £150 'wouldn't do it' for Carol, Jan then put £170 on the table, to which Carol said: "I don't like the purple [notes] at all."

Placing her next offer on the table, Jan said: "If we say £200, what do you think about that?" Despite this being the amount she was hoping to get, Carol said: "Still very low."

After Jan crept up to £270, which Carol rejected, the man himself was called in. David suggested that Jan put down £300 for the 'magnifique' bottle, to which she replied: "We'll do something between that."

Jan's final offer to Carol was £290, which she put down and said: "Which gets me a little profit and I think there, I'm safe." Carol replied: "Change [the £20 note] for another pink one, as that's the colour that I like."

Jan did as she was told, and the deal was done, with Carol receiving £100 more than she expected. Carol then confessed that she had paid just £120 for the perfume bottle, which Jan said was 'annoying'.

She added: "So it's been a good investment for you. Well done you, you've got a good eye."

Carol said: "Thank you, ribbit ribbit. That's £100 more than what I wanted - very happy."
