As Israel's operations extend further into southern Gaza, they are urging residents to evacuate, leaving almost 150,000 civilians with nowhere to go. The United Nations has warned of a worsening crisis, with an additional 400,000 people seeking refuge in the abysmal conditions of Rafah, at the southern tip of Gaza. To shed light on the situation, we have enlisted the expertise of Joe English, an emergency communications specialist with UNICEF.
According to English, the scale of the crisis is unimaginable. The suffering and dire needs of children and families in Gaza are beyond belief. UNICEF's core services in such crises include providing safe drinking water, food and nutrition services, protection from violence, access to education, and psychosocial support. However, due to the ongoing fighting, they are unable to address these needs adequately. There is a severe shortage of safe drinking water, a lack of food, and the World Food Programme warns of the risk of famine. Thousands of children have lost their lives, and there is limited access to education and psychosocial support to provide respite from the violence.
