Food banks and charities supporting some of the North East's most vulnerable are calling on the Government to do more to tackle soaring energy bills this winter as they share heartbreaking stories of people pushed to the brink.
It comes after new Prime Minister Liz Truss revealed her plan to shield households and businesses from rising costs to MPs in the House of Commons on Thursday, September 8. The PM said she understood many families were "worried about how they are going to make ends meet this autumn and winter" and announced a package of measures that include freezing domestic energy bills at around £2,500 for two years and setting up a fund for those using heating oil.
Ms Truss rejected calls for a windfall tax on oil and gas producers meaning the £150bn guarantee on energy costs will be funded by increased borrowing.
