Designer Alissa Johnson's style is the one that everyone wants right now. It's timeless, elegant, elevated, and yet laid-back and soft, filled with textures and layers. Classic yet casual is how I would describe it. I sat down with Alissa to discuss her journey as an interior designer, where it started, where's it going, and the approach she takes with her projects to achieve this always-on-trend, yet still 'trendy' interior design style.
'I strive to create an elevated look using unexpected elements, while maintaining a sense of timelessness, and most importantly, not sacrificing functionality or practicality in a space,' explains Alissa. 'Overall, I pride myself in creating warm spaces that feel like a home. I engage with every detail of my projects, from conception to completion, ensuring a specialized approach for each project. Whether it's a new build or a simple quick makeover, this hands-on process has allowed me to craft my own narrative in my projects.'
'It was important to me to create a firm that was approachable in an industry that can often feel intimidating and pretentious. We truly value collaboration and want to ensure our clients feel comfortable and involved in the design process while also maintaining a high-end standard in all our projects, delivering quality in each detail. For me, it’s not just designing spaces, it’s redefining the interior design experience. I also appreciate how our firm is a young, innovative all-women team which translates into our designs. We approach designs with a fresh perspective that challenges traditional norms,' she adds.
'My design philosophy is heavily influenced by the concept of a capsule wardrobe. Just as a capsule wardrobe emphasizes functionality and quality craftsmanship, I incorporate these principles into my designs. It’s important to focus on creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also practical and well-crafted. I wholeheartedly believe in investing in quality pieces that serve a purpose, rather than filling a space with unnecessary items. This approach results in designs that are timeless and versatile.'
How would you describe your design aesthetic?
'My design aesthetic is deeply rooted in my Southern upbringing where hospitality was paramount and homes were designed with layers of textures and elements to create warmth and coziness. I strive to translate the feel of Southern hospitality into my designs by incorporating rich textures, refined yet comfortable and functional furnishings, and thoughtful details for a welcoming space. Additionally, I believe in pushing design boundaries and encouraging clients to embrace new design directions, whether it’s incorporating bolder color palettes or experimenting with abstract textures.'
How did it all begin?
'As a business major specializing in entrepreneurship along with my passion for textiles and colors, it formed the perfect recipe for opening up my own firm, Alissa Johnson Interiors. Before taking this leap, my professional path began on the accounting and operations side of design, a role that I transitioned into encompassing both design and operations. I served as the Chief Operating Officer at RDID, which laid a solid foundation and smooth transition into opening up my own firm.'
What kind of work do you take on?
'Our projects consist of new construction, large-scale renovations, and full home furnishing projects for both luxury residential and boutique commercial. Our favorite types of projects that we take on are older home renovations because renovating a historic home presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. It requires an in-depth understanding of architectural heritage and a careful approach to historic preservation.'
What's your favorite project you have worked on so far?
'We just finished this amazing whole home renovation project in Glencoe where the client wanted a combination of California-style while also paying homage to the wife’s English heritage. The exterior of the home was charming and we wanted the interiors to reflect that feeling while honoring the history of the home. The final design has beautiful artisanal niches and elevated textures and details; you immediately know this home was designed specifically for the homeowners, reflecting their personalities and unique backgrounds that blankets the home with a feeling of warmth.'
Who inspired you when you started? And who inspires you now?
'I have so many designers I look up to – Michelle Gerson, Kelly Wearstler, Ali Budd, and Gillian Segal have been constant sources of inspiration lately. I love the range of their designs – how they are sophisticated and combine bold colors, elaborate patterns, and unexpected elements, continually pushing the boundaries of design. Their designs serve as a reminder to think outside the box and venture into new avenues of design.'
Who would be your dream clients?
'We are so lucky to work with some of the most amazing clients! With that being said, right now, a dream client for me would be in a location I haven’t done a project in yet. Getting to work with clients in other metropolitan cities across the US, that have their own distinct style and point of view would be amazing.'
'Personality-wise, my dream clients are eager to invest in their home, they look at it as an extension of their personalities and want it to be a unique reflection of themselves, unlike any other home. They appreciate the finer details of design, artistry, and craftsmanship; but, most importantly, they trust our firm to efficiently manage the entire design process, from concept to completion. The most successful projects come from clients who are trusting and allow us to take full reigns!'
What's next?
'One notable project we’re working on is the renovation of a distinguished home constructed in the 1880s. Throughout this project, our focus has been to tie in contemporary elements while respecting the integrity of the original design, culture, and craftsmanship that defines the home. We are anticipating the finished project and can’t wait to share!'
