Derry parents celebrate premature baby's first birthday with special donation

Parents of a premature baby born at the neonatal unit at a Derry hospital have paid tribute to the 'amazing' staff.

John and Belinda Lupton's baby girl Hannah was born two months prematurely in April 2021.

Due to the sudden birth, Derry girl Hannah required immediate care and spent several weeks in the neonatal unit at Altnagelvin Hospital.

The new parents were finally able to take a healthy daughter home in June 2021 - two weeks before her due date.

The couple were so grateful for all of the care Hannah received they requested that family and friends make a donation to the unit that saved their daughter's life rather than presents to mark her first birthday last month.

Last week, the family returned to the unit for the first time since Hannah's birth to present the staff with a special donation.

The couple said: “To the incredible team at Altnagelvin Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit we will never be able to thank you enough for your incredible support and kindness following the premature birth of our daughter Hannah in April 2021.

"Hannah stayed in the neonatal unit until June 2021 and getting our amazing baby girl home two whole weeks before her due date meant the world to us!

"Instead of presents for Hannah’s first birthday, we had a little fundraiser and hope this donation helps in some small way as a token of our appreciation for the care Hannah received in the Unit.

"We will be forever grateful to you all. Love from Belinda and John (Hannah’s mummy and daddy).”
