Dermot O'Leary says people are 'sick of' Tory chaos and many want a general election

Dermot O'Leary has addressed the growing calls across the country for a general election.

The This Morning presenter, 49, hosted the ITV show alongside Alison Hammond earlier today, following yesterday's dramatic day for British politics, which saw Prime Minister Liz Truss resign and Boris Johnson's name touted as a possible candidate to succeed her.

As he spoke to guests about the latest happenings from 10 Downing Street, Dermot explained how a lot of people want to see a general election due to being 'sick of this', and pondered if the constant changes to the Conservative Party leadership has seen Britain adopt a more presidential type of politics.

ITV's daytime programmes took a political angle today following the dramatic news from the Conservative Party, with Good Morning Britain interview Boris Johnson's dad Stanley Johnson about his son's potential return to frontline politics and Lord Jeffery Archer admitting the latest Tory saga 'won't have a happy ending.

This Morning followed in a similar tone, with hosts Alison and Dermot joined by guests on the sofa to discuss the latest government saga following yesterday's dramatic news.

"I think a lot of people do want to see a general election because they're sick of this," Dermot asked his guests.

"In one respect we do have this parliamentary system, where you vote for your MP and the party you want, but a lot of people see a more presidental style take on in the leadership elections and hustlings which has been anything but."

Moving on to lighter subjects on the daytime TV show, Carol Vorderman delighted viewers as she showed off a brand new look and opened up about her love life.

Sitting next to her Celebrity Gogglebox pal Gyles Brandreth, the star wowed ITV viewers with her youthful appearance, as she and Gyles joined hosts Dermot and Alison on the show's Love Clinic segment to offer viewer's advice on their dating dilemmas.

As Gyles admitted he had been 'blessed' meeting his now-wife, he explained how he and Carol are on 'different journey' - telling his pal: "Your line of life has been different."

"I'm a great believer in chapters of my life, and some are extended chapters and some aren't," Carol revealed when offering her romantic advice to viewers.

"I now, the last ten years or so, live a very much freer life where I have special friends and I am not looking for one person."
