'Derelict' south Bristol skate park in 'dire need' of funding, say campaigners

Campaigners are calling for more funds to renovate a 'neglected' skate park in south Bristol. The Victoria Park skate park in Bedminster 'currently resembles a derelict piece of tarmac', according to the Bristol Skatepark Collective, and they are asking for public support to improve its facilities.

It has raised £130,000 from various grants, but say they need more money to complete the project. An online fundraiser has been set up, and the website says that the skate park is 'unused, unkept and unloved' and has 'old damaged and dangerous equipment'.

It calls for funding to change this, and says: "This is a neglected space that is in dire need of updating to safely accommodate increased users as we emerge from lockdown post-Covid-19. The park currently resembles a derelict piece of tarmac that holds excellent potential for dramatic improvements."

And the website adds: "Frankly, we are getting left behind. Take a look at the other facilities in local cities and towns. Let's not forget that these places have far smaller demand with less wheeled enthusiasts, yet far superior facilities. As a proud Bristolonian, I am ashamed of this fact. We need to catch up."

Some of the improvements they are hoping to make include resurfacing of the space with smooth concrete, re-purposing of some existing blocks and the addition of new equipment to create a better layout and more exercise options. The final improvements will depend on the budget that is raised.

The fundraiser offers various rewards to people who give certain amounts. As it stands, £2,924 has been raised from public donations, with a £20,000 target set.
