Derelict Paisley pub to be demolished and replaced with drive-thru

A derelict Paisley pub is to be demolished and replaced with a drive-thru restaurant after plans were given the go-ahead.

A12 Properties in Glasgow had applied to Renfrewshire Council for permission to demolish the former Travellers Rest pub on Wallneuk Road.

The building, which was most recently the Junction 27 nightclub, was built in the late 1990s but has been sitting decaying since 2010.

It currently sits on overgrown land behind the Tim Hortons restaurant and drive-thru at Renfrew Road Retail Park, which also houses the Range, Lidl and a Marks and Spencer food store.

A report by council planners states: “The application site currently accommodates a derelict former public house and its grounds are currently overgrown and have an unkempt appearance,

“The site is accessed via Wallneuk Road which also acts as the main entrance to a Tim Hortons Drive-Thru and Renfrew Road Retail Park. The surrounding road network has been significantly upgraded by these recent developments,”

The proposed restaurant would be a single-storey stand-alone building with external seating and landscaped areas. It would include 18 parking spaces including two disabled spaces and two waiting spaces.

The report adds that the development would contribute towards and complement the retail park without affecting businesses in nearby Paisley town centre.

“The proposal would introduce a new complementary facility on the edge of Renfrew Road Retail Park and would assist in providing a balanced provision of facilities in an edge of centre location which are not provided nor can be easily accommodated within the centre of Paisley.

“ The proposal would therefore assist in tackling a deficiency without significantly impacting the vitality or viability of the adjacent centre.

“Additionally it is considered that the proposal would not be detrimental to the character of the site not its immediate surroundings but would improve the appearance and function of this retail/commercial area generally and bring a currently unused area of land back into beneficial use to the benefit of the vitality and viability of the retail park as a whole.

“It is considered that the demolition of an unkempt, and compromised building and development of a new drive-thru restaurant would be a positive addition creating a quality facility, sensitive to its surroundings in both function and design.”
