Derek McInnes still aggrieved by Killie vs Celtic penalty flashpoint

Derek McInnes admits he still feels aggrieved Kilmarnock weren't awarded a penalty in last season's Viaplay Cup semi-final against Celtic.

The Hoops ran out 2-0 winners at Hampden thanks to goals from Daizen Maeda and Giorgos Giakoumakis.

The first was scored in the opening stages of the match, while the second was tapped home with practically the last kick of the ball.

Killie gave a good account of themselves at Hampden that cold, wet, winter's night back in January. Danny Armstrong was electric on the wings and if weren't for poor finishing, things could've been different.

One incident that always sticks out from the match though, was Joe Wright being bundled to the deck inside the Celtic box by Giakoumakis with only moments to go.

Referee Willie Collum waved and played on, which caused outrage in the Killie camp as they were denied the opportunity to level the scoring from the spot prior to Celtic's second.

The teams will meet in the competition again this season, this time in the last-16 at Rugby Park this Sunday.

Looking ahead to that showdown with Brendan Rodgers' side, McInnes admitted the end of that match at the national stadium is still a sore one for his team to look back on.

Although, he also joked that he should let the incident go seven months on.

He said: "Last season in the semi-final at Hampden we felt really aggrieved that we never got the chance to take it to extra time.

"Nothing will change my mind that we should've had a penalty kick in the last minute of the game. But it showed that we did a lot right in that game to take Celtic close.

"I believed the referee was told it was maybe worth having a look at and the referee has seen it for what it was. He thought it was a defender trying to buy a penalty. Here's me, 'Let it go, Derek' Christ.

"He should've been made to go and see the incident again. That's what I feel. If he still arrived at the same conclusion then it's down to the referee's perception but for me, it was a penalty."

Killie have enjoyed an impressive start to the 2023/24 campaign with a victory over Rangers and an away point at Tynecastle.
