Colin Hendry believes Rangers are right to be focused on bringing in a Scottish "core" under Derek McInnes' new regime.
The Ibrox outfit have already snapped up prolific striker Lawrence Shankland and are prioritising Scots talent where possible. Chairman Andrew Cavenagh has already confirmed they want national identity within the squad.
Braveheart knows how vital that can be having played alongside the likes of Barry Ferguson, Ian Ferguson, Neil McCann and McInnes himself in a team who knew what it took to play for the club.
And Hendry has urged McInnes to get the best out of a squad with a Tartan swagger if and when they can bring new signings in the door to join the squad.
Speaking to the Daily Record Hendry said: "It's good to have that homegrown element because the Scottishness and the core and everything else starts with the manager.
“And that's a great thing because he can deliver things to the playing staff, and not even just the playing staff, just the whole staff at the football club will know the values of the football club.
“They’ve already signed Shankland and I suspect he will be looking at other Scottish lads who can fit that bill to.
“I think Derek’s return to the club is a great appointment. He knows the club inside out. He's been there, played there long enough. He knows the values. And when you've got a manager in there that can portray that back to the players, it'll be a bit different from what the players that are there at the minute have gone through with the managers recently, because they didn't have any real affiliation with Rangers at all.
“I think it’s going to be a great appointment for Rangers. It really will be.”
Luke Graham, of Dundee, is another player on the Rangers transfer shortlist.
