Passionate Derek Ferguson has warned the Rangers board a mammoth rebuild is needed to reignite a "stale" squad and compete with Celtic.
The former Ibrox star is craving a fresh start after Michael Beale's side came up short against their biggest rivals in Viaplay Cup Final on Sunday. And Ferguson has Alfredo Morelos atop his cull list but Malik Tillman and Borna Barisic are among others who he reckons there is a case to move on from this summer. Michael Beale has previously stated signing the USA international on a permanent deal from Bayern Munich is a "no-brainer".
But the player-turned-pundit – speaking on Open Goal – reckons serious questions need answered if Rangers truly want to dislodge Celtic as the best team in Scotland. He said: "I think there needs to be a big turnover. It’s stale and needs a real overhaul. That comes from the men above. They need to do it if they want to compete with Celtic.
"Over the last number of years you put up with so much with Morelos because he gives you it. But at this stage? I’m fed up of the guy. He needs to go. A number need to leave. There’s a realisation at Rangers that the board need to get a grip. If they want to compete with Celtic, they have to find a way.
"Kent is one I’d keep if he wants to be there. Barisic? Not for me. He’s shown in the past he can’t handle it mentally. Goldson? Aye. Tav? He’s different class going forward but he struggles defensively. They turn and jog back. Tillman? Wouldn’t pay £5m for him. He’s a young boy but in that game did he have the legs and desire?"
Co-pundit James McFadden then noted Tillman's injury which was evident in the warm-up, however, Ferguson wasn't in a rush to accept excuses. He added: "He shouldn’t be playing if he’s not fit."
And he then followed on, stating: “It’s a real worry. Celtic are the benchmark, not just their style of play but their fitness, drive and determination. It was a real eyeopener on Sunday.”
