Here’s some news on the New Orleans Saints quarterback situation. Head coach Dennis Allen told local media Friday that he expects Andy Dalton to start his third consecutive game under center, stepping in again for the injured Jameis Winston in Week 6’s game with the Cincinnati Bengals. Winston recently returned to practice, but he’s not recovered well enough from back and ankle injuries.
That means Dalton will face his old Bengals team for the third time in three years, and on his third different team. What’s more surprising than that is he’s 2-0 against Cincinnati: the Dalton-led Dallas Cowboys defeated the Bengals in 2020 by a lopsided 30-7 finish (he went 16-of-23 for 185 yards, with 2 touchdown passes and 2 sacks); things were tighter for Dalton’s Chicago Bears team in 2021, but they managed a 20-17 win (with Dalton completing 9 of 11 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown, also taking a sack, though Justin Fields finished the game). He’ll look to keep that streak alive on Sunday.
As for some other injury outlooks: Allen was optimistic about safety Marcus Maye returning to the lineup after he missed three games with an abdomen injury, but he said wide receiver Michael Thomas is improving but “not there yet” while recovering from a turf toe injury. Veteran slot receiver Jarvis Landry is expected to remain sidelined by an ankle issue. New Orleans is managing a variety of injuries at multiple positions, so they’ll have to be on top of their game to overcome all of this adversity.
