A young woman has been injured after being hit by a police car in south London.

Officers were called shortly after 1.20pm on Tuesday to a report of a collision involving a police vehicle and a pedestrian between Camberwell Green and Denmark Hill in Southwark.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) attended and a 27-year-old woman was treated at the scene.

Rawa Babaker was cutting a client's hair at Camberwell Barbers when he heard a bang outside the shop. He quickly looked out the window and saw the aftermath of the crash.

He told the Standard: “There was fur coming out from her jacket. The impact [the crash] had ripped it from her jacket. She was screaming. I don’t know what happened next.

“They shut off the whole road. By the time I finished, they had put a cover over her.

“As soon as it happened the whole road was looking outside. There were a lot of people. I would say there were 100 people just watching from the pavement.”

Another witness who rushed out of their shop following the crash told the Standard they saw police officers rushing over to a woman on the floor.

“She was on the floor for a while,” they explained. “The police were speaking to her. Everyone was crowding around the area.”

The Met Police said it is waiting for an update on the pedestrian’s condition and that no police officers required treatment.

Road closures remain in place at Denmark Hill and Camberwell New Road following the crash.

A LAS spokesperson said: “We were called at 1.24pm today (18 March) to reports of a road traffic collision in Denmark Hill, Camberwell.

“We sent an ambulance crew and a paramedic in a fast response car.

“We treated a patient at the scene and took her to a major trauma centre as a priority.”
