Denis Irwin makes prediction about Manchester United with Erik ten Hag in charge next season

Denis Irwin believes Manchester United are a few 'big additions' away from challenging for the Premier League title next season.

Erik ten Hag's target for his first year at Old Trafford was to qualify for Champions League football and he reached that goal, with the club finishing third in the league, which followed success in the Carabao Cup.

It was a fine debut campaign for Ten Hag and it's hoped the Dutchman can build on that again. United are in the transfer market for new signings this summer and it's understood a world-class striker and midfielder are wanted.

Ten Hag has been described as 'obsessed' with signing Harry Kane, whilst personal terms have been agreed with Mason Mount.

Club legend Irwin has given his thoughts on what can be achieved next season and he thinks a title challenge can be launched.

Irwin thinks United will be able to compete with defending champions Manchester City if they can sign a few quality players.

“I think what was hoped for last year was achieved," Irwin told The Irish Times. "The hard bit now is to get another couple of players in, in the summer, and try to get much closer to challenging, because we’ve not challenged in 10 years.

“He brought in some good leaders, Casemiro and [Lisandro] Martinez was what we needed. Some ex-players said we’re too far away. But with some big additions, I don’t see why not.

“It can be won. At one point this year, you thought Arsenal were very much in the box seat. I do hope the Premier League does stay unpredictable. I do know that five of the last six have been to City, but anything can happen.

“He [Kane] is linked to us [United]. He’s got a decision to make, he’s been a great player for Spurs and he’s tied to a year contract, I don’t know what’s going to happen. A new manager [Ange Postecoglou] has gone in there.

"He done a great job at Celtic and he’ll be wanting to keep him.”
