Melbourne have launched a last-ditch bid to have Jacob van Rooyen cleared for the upcoming finals campaign, with the club to appeal against the star forward's three-match ban for striking.

Van Rooyen's bid to overturn or reduce his suspension at the AFL tribunal on Tuesday night fell flat, but the Demons have announced they will take the case to the AFL appeals board on Thursday night.
