Demolition of houses ‘the only effective’ solution after elderly woman died in flood

  • A review has recommended the demolition of an entire row of 26 terraced houses on Tapton Terrace in Chesterfield , following severe flooding during Storm Babet in October 2023.
  • The flooding incident led to the death of 83-year-old resident Maureen Gilbert, prompting a coroner's report that urged action from the government and Environment Agency.
  • Chesterfield Borough Council and the Environment Agency concluded that demolition is the 'only effective and viable' long-term solution, as alternative flood defence measures would not provide adequate protection given the significant and increasing flood risk due to climate change.
  • Homeowners have been assured they will receive a fair market payment for their properties, alongside compensation for disruption and loss, with tailored support being offered to each household.
  • Local MP Toby Perkins stated that while the news would be difficult for residents, most accept the decision as there is no viable long-term way to make the homes safe, and his priority is to ensure residents are treated fairly.
