Democrats Condemn Supreme Court Ruling On Presidential Powers

Donald Trump Supreme Court Donald Trump speaks after arriving at New York Supreme Court, Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, in New York

Following the recent decision by the Supreme Court, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed strong disapproval, labeling it as a 'sad day for our democracy.' The New York Democrat emphasized the fundamental principle of the judicial system that no one is above the law, stating that acts of treason or incitement of insurrection should not be considered inherent constitutional powers granted to a president.

Joining Schumer in criticism, various congressional Democrats have voiced their outrage over the ruling. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, characterized the decision as 'disastrous,' attributing the perceived weakening of accountability in cases of presidential misconduct to what she described as an 'extreme right-wing Supreme Court.'

Rep. Frederica Wilson from Texas also condemned the court's ruling, accusing it of failing to uphold the principle of 'equal justice under law.' Notably, Wilson pointed out that three justices appointed by former President Trump sided with him in the decision.
