Democratic Rep. Cartwright's New Campaign Ad Highlights Border Wall Support

Border wall between United States and Mexico

Veteran Democratic Pennsylvania Rep. Matt Cartwright recently launched a new campaign ad emphasizing his support for a southern border wall, showcasing how Democrats in competitive races are reaching out to crossover voters in their reelection efforts.

Representing Pennsylvania’s 8th district since 2013, Cartwright, who won reelection by a narrow margin in 2022, has a track record of diverging from his party's stance. His latest ad aims to highlight his independence and appeal to conservative voters.

In the ad, Cartwright draws a parallel between a flood wall along a river and the southern border wall, stressing the necessity of both structures. He states, 'Our flood wall, it’s big and expensive, like the one on our southern border. But both are absolutely necessary.' Cartwright also mentions his support for building a border wall, defunding sanctuary cities, and deporting immigrants who commit crimes, actions that have drawn criticism from some within his party.

Throughout his campaign, Cartwright has focused on conservative priorities. In addition to the immigration ad, he has invested significant resources in airing ads that highlight his backing of law enforcement. These issues have been key targets for Republicans in congressional races.

Cartwright's willingness to break ranks with his party has been evident in recent years. He was the sole Democratic representative from Pennsylvania to attend Trump’s 2017 inauguration, has criticized President Biden's immigration policies, and has been a vocal supporter of Israel.
