Republican Rep. John Duarte has conceded to his Democratic challenger Adam Gray in California’s 13th Congressional District, according to Duarte's campaign spokesman. Gray secured a 187-vote lead after the five counties in the district certified their results on Tuesday.
This race was the final unresolved House race in the nation. With Gray's win, Republicans now hold 220 seats compared to Democrats' 215. Overall, Democrats have gained one seat from their pre-election total.
Looking ahead, the Republican majority is expected to be even narrower at the start of the upcoming year. Former GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned from the House last month and will not be taking his seat in the new Congress. Additionally, Republican Reps. Elise Stefanik of New York and Mike Waltz of Florida are anticipated to depart from the chamber to assume roles in the Trump administration.
If all three seats are vacant simultaneously, a 217-215 majority would mean that Republicans cannot afford to lose a single member on a party-line vote.
