The Chicago Bulls made a couple of interesting signings this summer. Bringing in Jevon Carter and Torrey Craig will help their defense and three-point shooting, but how much does it change the ceiling of their season? With the same core in place, it seems as though the Bulls could be destined for another similar season.
Throughout the summer, some Bulls fans were calling for the team to hit the reset button. The core of Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic is solid, but as of now, it doesn’t seem good enough to win a championship, and that should be the ultimate goal for Chicago.
Buy Bulls TicketsHowever, DeRozan doesn’t agree with that mindset. During a chat with Mark Medina of Sportskeeda, DeRozan said that fans who suggested the team rebuilds “don’t understand basketball.” (H/t Joseph Zucker of Bleacher Report)
“I think a lot of people who say that or suggest that really don’t understand basketball at all, in my opinion,” DeRozan said. “You can think that’s an answer or that’s a route. But there’s no telling how long that route is going to even last. That route doesn’t necessarily always work in a timely fashion that you may think it will take.”
In two years with their current core, the Bulls have only won a single playoff game, but a big part of that is the loss of Lonzo Ball.
That said, Chicago can’t point to that as an excuse anymore. They need to think about their roster as is.
It’s understandable that DeRozan believes in his team and doesn’t think a rebuild would solve Chicago’s problems, and that’s because it might not. But at some point, taking that risk could be necessary.
