TRICHY: Blame it on the heat or a renewed interest, demand for doorstep vaccination against Covid-19 from the elderly population and persons with disabilities (PwD) is gradually going up in Trichy city. Requests to administer booster doses in bulk have been coming from gated communities, small apartments and government employees’ quarters.
On Sunday, mega camps to administer the vaccine were conducted at about 1,200 locations including mobile vaccination spots at densely populated areas. The drive in Madurai saw good turnout with as many as 65,670 beneficiaries vaccinated in 3415 camps, 2,415 of them in rural areas.
Ahead of the camps in Trichy, many senior citizens eligible for booster doses and second dose vaccines have been approaching the local body to arrange vaccination at the doorstep citing the sultry weather. Hence, Trichy corporation allotted medical teams to cover 1,000 spots on Sunday. Each of the spots was allotted only 50 doses, mostly Covishield.
“Both my parents are septuagenarians so instead of visiting a static camp amid the hot weather it would be great if the corporation covers the elderly population at the doorstep at least for booster doses,” P Sai Prabhakar, a native of Thiruvanaikoil said. About eight months ago, Trichy corporation extensively covered PwD and senior citizens under a doorstep vaccination drive. Residents have sought similar measures by introducing a helpline to place requests. However, as there is a shortage of nurses now, officials said that doorstep vaccination coverage will pick up pace gradually. “From next week, we are considering deploying more nurses with a stipend for doorstep vaccination to cover the bedridden and elderly population,” a senior corporation health official said.
At the vaccination camps, Trichy district had vaccinated 55,000 people until 3 pm, fourth highest in the state after Tiruvannamalai, Thanjavur and Salem. Around 10,000 people have taken their first dose of the vaccine and 43,000 their second dose. Madurai health officials said more than 75% of those who turned up were for the second dose. Precaution doses and Covid-19 vaccination for eligible children were also administered at the mega vaccination drive.
