"Deluded" Conor McGregor criticised for "most dangerous on the planet" claim

Conor McGregor has claimed he is the most dangerous "vertical puncher" in the world - much to the dismay of fans.

The former two-weight UFC champion is continuing his rehabilitation from the broken leg he suffered in his third fight against Dustin Poirier last summer. McGregor is unlikely to return before August and could move up to welterweight in a bid to win a third belt in a third different weight divsion.

The 33-year-old regularly posts updates on social media but his latest video, which shows him pounding a punch bag on the floor, has not been well received by fans. Alongside the video, McGregor said: "Me Tarzan, You Jane! I am the greatest and most dangerous vertical puncher on this planet. You fight me you are fighting for your life. Simple as that! Everyone in the game knows it. I do real damage."

Fans were quick to respond, with one saying: "The delusion has reached comedic levels" while another added: "Very slow, little power. Work the speeds, to be unpredictable, not so much muscle". Another comment read sarcastically, "Only problem is you're the one always on the ground."

McGregor has won just one fight since his 2016 stoppage of Eddie Alvarez which saw the Dubliner crowned lightweight champion. He went on to lose to Floyd Mayweather in the boxing ring before being choked out by bitter rival Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor's sole victory in the last six years came in a 40-second stoppage of Donald Cerrone, but the veteran this week admitted he was looking for a way out of that fight. Should McGregor opt to remain at lightweight, he will have a keen interest in this weekend's UFC 274 card.

The show is headlined by 155lb champion Charles Oliveira's second defence of his belt against Justin Gaethje while Michael Chandler and Tony Ferguson clash on the undercard. McGregor insists he wants to return in a welterweight title shot against Kamaru Usman but the Nigerian is set to defend his belt against Leon Edwards this summer.
