'Delighted' as plans for former North Wales Woolworths store get the go-ahead

Plans to convert a former Woolworths store into flats and retail space have been given the go ahead.

The Blaenau Ffestiniog Woolies shop closed in the 1990s and was later turned into a furniture and carpet warehouse.

That store then closed and the unit has lain empty for a number of years.

But new plans were submitted to Gwynedd Council for the partial demolition of the site to make way for a new retail unit and parking spaces as well as four flats, with one designated for affordable housing.

Planning officers at Gwynedd council had recommended the application for approval and this week the planning committee gave it the green light.

Jamie Bradshaw, a director at Owen Devenport, the agent for the application, said: “We were delighted with the planning committee’s approval of this application, which endorses the work by our team, WM Design, and the authority’s planning officers to produce a high quality redevelopment of this long vacant site.

“It will now offer something back to the community, with a mix of low-cost homes and a smaller retail space that is more suited to today’s needs.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the site redeveloped and back in the condition that the community deserves.”

Applicant Llywarch Davies said the development would provide “a valuable contribution in addressing the shortfall of housing supply in the county.”
