Firefighters have said a huge field fire in Nottinghamshire may have been caused by a 'deliberate or a careless act. Crews rushed to the scene of the incident near Portland Park in Kirkby-in-Ashfield on Thursday, August 11.
Ashfield Fire Station issued a statement on Facebook on Friday, August 12., in which they provided further details and issued a warning as the hot weather continues.
The blaze was across several fields and destroyed farmers' crops and wildlife habitat, the fire service has confirmed.
Appliances from Ashfield Fire Station attended the scene along with crews from Alfreton, Eastwood, and Worksop.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: "It did not just happen, it may have been deliberate or a careless act of discarding items such as glass bottles or lit cigarettes etc.
"The fire was extinguished after lots of hard work by the Firefighters, farmers and some local residents. Three main jets, two hose reels and beaters were used.
"Ashfield Fire Station would like to thank the farmers and local residents for their assistance dealing with this fire.
"Please be Fire Aware, take litter home with you, don’t have Disposable barbecues and please do not throw lit cigarette ends onto the ground."
