An alleged "deliberate" fire was started in Newport overnight, firefighters have confirmed.
South Wales Fire and Rescue were alerted to the fire at 11.06pm on Wednesday, August 10, in Shaftesbury, Newport, near the site of the old Sainsbury's and the Usk river. Crews from Malpas attended the scene and the incident was confirmed to be a grass fire.
Crews worked to extinguish the fire and a spokesperson confirmed the fire was out by 11.39pm. Investigation from the firefighters at the scene have determined the ignition was "deliberate."
A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue said: "At approximately 11.06pm on Wednesday, August 10, we received reports of a grass fire in Shaftesbury, Newport. Crews from Malpas station attended the scene and extinguished the fire. The incident concluded at approximately 11.39pm. The incident has been deemed as deliberate."
Gwent Police have been contacted for comment.
