Delia Smith's Lorraine Kelly appearance sparks backlash against chef for 'tone deaf' Ukraine error

Delia Smith faced a backlash from ITV viewers on Wednesday when she thought that cushions in the Lorraine studio were a nod to her being owner of Norwich City, rather a tribute to war-torn Ukraine.

Chef and football club boss Delia joined presenter Lorraine Kelly to talk about her new book You Matter, which the now 80-year-old said she wrote as she wanted people to "recognise the depth they have."

Delia's chat with Lorraine didn't go to plan as the show went off air mid-interview, for around 20 seconds, with viewers watching at home left watching a black screen as both the audio and visual cut out.

Both Delia and Lorraine were blissfully ignorant to the technical hitch, with the interview in mid-flow as the show returned.

As it came to an end, Lorraine told the culinary icon: "Do you know what? I feel so much better after talking to you!

"I feel like it's all going to be OK somehow as Delia says."

Delia thought Lorraine's cushions were for her being Norwich City owner (ITV)

Delia then noticed the yellow and teal cushions in the Lorraine studio, that have been there for a number of days, and remarked: "Can I just ask you one question?

"You've got a green cushion and a yellow cushion, is that because it's Norwich City colours?"

Looking slightly taken aback, Lorraine replied: "It's Norwich City colours, but it's also a little subtle tribute to the people of Ukraine also."

Viewers watching at home couldn't comprehend Delia's lack of awareness of the situation in Ukraine.

One tweeted: "Yeah Delia it's all about you never mind theres a war on and people are dying," with a second reacting: "Sickened with today's guest on Lorraine Kelly asking if the cushions behind Lorraine Kelly were Norwich City Colours, Blue & Yellow Really? Really?

"Delia not appropriate given the war situation in Ukraine."

A third posted: "Maybe it’s just me but I found the whole Delia Smith section slightly inappropriate given what’s going on in the world, and then the cushion comment."
