Delhi: Woman 'forced to undergo abortion 14 times', kills self

NEW DELHI: Days after a 33-year-old woman allegedly killed herself in southeast Delhi's Jaitpur, having been "forced to undergo abortion 14 times" by her live-in partner in a span of eight years, police have booked the man on charges of rape, forced abortion and abetment of suicide. The accused is absconding.

Police confirmed that the woman's body was found hanging inside a house in Jaitpur on July 5. She was shifted to a hospital where the doctor declared her brought dead. Deputy commissioner of police (southeast) Esha Pandey said they were handed over a suicide note and viscera by the doctor. "The suicide note stated that she had been living in with a person called Gautam Kumar Singh for eight years. He had entered into a physical relationship with her on the pretext of marriage. He, however, had now refused to marry her and left her with no other option, but to commit suicide," Pandey said, adding that a case was registered at Jaitpur police station.

"The stool used for hanging and the deceased's mobile phone were seized. After preliminary inquiry, it was revealed that the woman had been living separately from her husband for the past seven-eight years," she said.

Police said they were verifying the claim in the note that the woman had been forced to undergo abortion 14 times.

The victim's brother told TOI that he didn't know much about the accused. "My sister had two daughters, aged 14 and 12. Both lived in a hostel," he said, adding that she had been facing financial problems.
