But that’s not what one foreign traveller experienced when he took his first ride on the Delhi Metro, and he can’t stop talking about it online. A video he shared on Instagram about his trip has gone viral because he genuinely seems blown away by what he saw.
Rory Porter, who has about 15,000 followers on Instagram, posted a clip of himself taking the Delhi Metro for the first time. He’s travelled to India before, but this was his first experience of the city’s most popular public transport system. Right from the start, he was struck by how smooth everything felt, starting with the security checks that remind him of an airport, where bags go through an X‑ray machine before you can enter the platform area.
Once on board, he couldn’t help but point out how affordable it was. A roughly half‑hour journey cost him just ₹43 (about £0.35), which he said was “very, very cheap” and probably among the lowest fares he’s seen anywhere in the world. The trains themselves looked modern, sleek and clean, he even said they smelled good, which is something many commuters might never think to mention.
Porter kept focusing on what he saw around him: plenty of seats, air‑conditioned coaches, and a lack of overcrowding even mid‑ride. Pointing to all of this, he doesn’t just call the Delhi Metro “good.” He goes further and says it might be better than the London Underground, which is often held up as one of the world’s iconic transit systems.
The video struck a chord online, and within hours it had racked up tens of thousands of views. Many social media users were quick to note that positive stories about Indian infrastructure rarely go viral, usually, it’s the more dramatic or chaotic clips that get shared again and again. One commenter even joked about how footage of people dangerously riding on top of trains often spreads, while a genuinely glowing review of a clean, safe metro doesn’t get the same attention.
At a time when travel diaries tend to highlight tourist attractions, food, or cultural quirks, it’s refreshing to see a simple metro ride become a moment of genuine surprise and admiration — and one that plenty of people back home now know about too.
