Delhi airport collapse: Deceased cab driver was working overtime to save up for daughter’s wedding

Ramesh Kumar, the cab driver who died in the Delhi airport roof collapse on June 28, had breathed his last even before he was taken to the hospital, as per a complaint filed in the matter.

The complaint lodged at the Delhi Airport Police Station said that Kumar died before the Delhi police took him to Medanta Hospital. Speaking to Newslaundry, his wife Asha Devi accused the police of negligence and delay in treatment.

Holding the government responsible for her husband’s death, Asha said, “The police made us sit at the police station for two hours and did not tell us anything about his condition. We kept telling them to hand him to us so that we could get him treated in some other hospital. But the police did not even give us the body. And after two hours, they told us that he had died."

Asha also questioned how did the roof collapse due to the rain.

Kumar’s family lives in a rented accommodation in Rohini of Delhi.

She said that Kumar was working overtime to save up for their elder daughter's wedding, which was set to be held next month. He was the only bread earner of the family and is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.

The Delhi International Airport Authority has said that the primary cause of the accident is said to be heavy rain and strong winds, and the “real reasons” will be investigated.

Notably, the accident took place at T-1 terminal of the Delhi International Airport which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March this year.
