NEW DELHI: A 70-year-old woman died after she was mowed down by a truck while crossing a road in north Delhi’s Gulabi Bagh on Saturday. Police have arrested the errant driver.
The deceased was identified as Rukmani Devi, who lived with her family in Kishanganj. According to police, the incident took place when she was going to the market to buy vegetables, along with her 25-year-old relative.
The relative told cops that they were going towards Pratap Nagar at around 7pm and crossing Vir Banda Bairagi Marg when a truck coming from the side of Gulabi Bagh police station mowed down the elderly woman. “Due to traffic, the driver was not able to flee and was caught along with the truck,” the relative said.
The accused was later identified as Krishna (22), a resident of Sant Kabir Nagar. He was driving the truck bearing Haryana's number plate.
A case under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of IPC was registered.
