Delays on busy Merseyside road for up to nine weeks

The reopening of a busy Merseyside road has been delayed for up to nine weeks.

Worked started on Bankfield Lane, Churchtown in April and was expected to last until June 15. United Utilities has now delayed the completion of the project until Autumn this year. Bankfield Lane close to the junction of Blundell lane will be closed from Monday 27 June for approximately nine weeks.

According to United Utilities there has been a delay in the constriction of new sewer pipes that connect into the storage tank, due to the ground conditions. Neighbors on Verulam Road and Merlewood Avenue have been blighted by serve flooding in recent years.

United Utilities aim is to improve the local sewer network to deal more effectively with heavy rainfall. A United Utilities spokesperson said: “There has been a delay with the construction of the sewer pipes that connect into the storage tank due to the ground conditions and the new dates we are now working to are listed below.

“The closure at Bankfield Lane at the junction of Verulam Road will remain in place for a further three weeks Following completion of work on Bankfield Lane / Verulam Road, we will then need to close Bankfield Lane, close to the junction of Blundell Lane.

"Blundell Lane will remain open. This will be from Monday 27th June 2022 for approximately nine weeks. Clearly signed local traffic diversions will be in place during the above road closures and access to all properties and businesses will be maintained at all times as will pedestrian access.

"All refuse collections will continue as normal. We understand construction activity and roadworks can be inconvenient and we’ll always try to keep disruption to a minimum when carrying out these improvements.

“The project is due to be completed Autumn 2022."
