Deion Sanders Doubles Down on Rift With TCU Assistant Coach

Shedeur Sanders vaulted his name into the national spotlight Saturday, throwing for 510 yards and four touchdowns in Colorado’s upset win at TCU. The quarterback started for two years at Jackson State, but in his first game at a Power 5 program, he was ready for the moment.

That was no accident, though, according to Shedeur’s father, Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders. As it turns out, Deion and Shedeur have a bit of history with TCU offensive coordinator Kendal Briles.

On Monday, while appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Sanders doubled down on the rift with Briles, explaining that Briles overlooked Shedeur during a visit to Florida State years ago.

“We went to the camp of a certain school, and a certain coordinator we just played against, offensive coordinator, he was at that school, and we went to this school, a camp, and he didn’t pay him no attention,” Sanders said. “I don’t think he even spoke to him. He just pushed him off to the side.”

Briles has been an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for almost a decade at Baylor, Florida Atlantic, Houston, Florida State and Arkanasas. Briles accepted the TCU offensive coordinator position in the offseason after predecessor Garrett Riley left for Clemson.

“He wanted to beat that guy so bad that he just went to work,” Deion said of Shedeur’s motivation to play well against Briles’s new team.

The younger Sanders proved a lot of doubters wrong over the weekend, as moving up from FCS competition to FBS opponents didn’t seem to faze him. But he apparently wanted to stick it to one doubter in particular.
